Derby beat Cambridge 3 - 0 in women’s volleyball at the University of Derby Sports Centre
Derby still holds second position in the BUCS league along with Angela Ruskin University after the results of the game.
In the match which took place on 5th February, Derby started strong and lead the game for the first set quickly scoring points over Cambridge early on.
Although the second set went to Derby, Cambridge started to fight Derby toward the end of the set, however, it was too little too late.
The third set could have been anybody’s with Cambridge leading the set early on it seemed like they may be able to even up the points.
However, Derby bit back and levelled the points, for most of the set it was like playing cat and mouse, Cambridge scored a point then Derby.
Team Derby win a point in the second setand mouse, Cambridge scored a point then Derby.
This carried on until the end of the set with both teams on 24 points each there was only one point in it for Derby to win.
You could see in this set that Cambridge was desperate to score a point so they could have a point over Derby.
Then Jess Smith from Team Derby touched the ball over the net and Cambridge couldn’t return it, a move she had used successfully on the team to win 3 points during the set.
This match now leaves Cambridge women’s 2nd 4th in the league.
The captain of Cambridge’s team, Julia Shafer, said; ‘I think six players is not enough to sustain a game at that level.
It’s a shame because I think we played well, next time we will bring in more players.’
‘It was a good game but we were stronger than them and in general in really happy with my team’ said Viltė Vilūnaitė, Captain of Derby women’s team.
‘We have improved and we’ve got some new players with us today and they did well.’
The next match for Cambridge will be at home on 17th February against Nottingham Women’s 3rd who are 5th in the league.
Derby will go against Cranfield women's 1st at home on the 10th February, Cranfield is currently bottom of the league.
